Walking 10,000 Steps a Day -- A Review of What It Means

Posted on: August 27, 2011

Walking 10,000 (10K) steps a day is a "loser" on many accounts.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT trendy or splashy as a weight-loss approach. Some of those approaches have expensive TV commercials behind them. Many have celebrity endorsements behind them. At least one ("Biggest Loser") has even had its own TV series behind it. When is the last time that you saw an expensive TV commercial, celebrity endorsement, or TV series for a 10K-steps/day program?

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT one of the popular approaches for improving relationships, either. Some of those approaches have weekend seminars behind them. Many have pop-psychology book authors behind them. Several have even had their own reality-TV series behind them. When is the last time that you saw a weekend seminar, pop-psychology book author, or reality-TV series covering a 10K-steps/day program?

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT super-exciting to most people as an approach to health and fitness. Some of those approaches have huge followings. Many have home-workout machines and infomercials behind them. And it becomes fashionable to put that equipment in a room dedicated for working out, even if one rarely or never works out.  When is the last time that you saw huge-following statistics, home-workout machines, or infomercials related to a 10K-steps/day program?

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to give you six-pack abs, huge biceps, a miniature waist, giant shoulders, massive calves, super-curvaceous glutes, or any other in-demand body part. When is the last time that you saw an ad for enhancing any of these body parts by walking 10K steps a day?

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to make you go buy lots of expensive clothing that you can show off to your friends or that you can complain is priced too high, unlike what many runners and other athletes often do.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to require you to buy a membership at a local gym.
Face it: You can walk almost anywhere, including on a treadmill or track, but you do not need a gym's treadmill or walking and running track to walk 10K steps a day.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to cure all insomnia. If you need serious help with your sleep, then consider seeing a sleep clinic.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to make you always energetic.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to make you always calm.

Walking 10K steps a day is NOT going to guarantee that your children or grandchildren will admire you as an exemplar of perfect health.

But walking 10K steps a day DOES help people to lose weight. It DOES help people to improve their relationships with others. It DOES lead to improved sleep quality, more calm, and more energy. And it DOES lead to better health and fitness. So you must decide whether to focus on what walking 10K steps a day is NOT or on what it actually DOES.
